Evaluating an AI customer support agent

This category is priced and sold differently than traditional helpdesk software — outcome-based pricing and sales-call-only deals are the norm, not the exception, so the buying process itself is part of the evaluation.

Buying an AI customer support agent isn’t like buying helpdesk software — you’re evaluating a system that resolves conversations on its own, and the category is priced accordingly. Most of these vendors sell through a sales call rather than a self-serve checkout, and at least two price on outcomes rather than seats. The evaluation has to account for that buying motion as much as the feature set.

The pricing and buying-motion split

Intercom Fin is priced on outcomes — it charges for resolved conversations rather than seats — and doesn’t require a sales call to buy. Sierra is also outcome-based, priced on resolutions, but does require a sales call. Ultimate.ai is the one vendor here with a straightforward published starting price ($55/month) and no sales call required. Ada, Decagon, and Forethought all require a sales call with no public starting price at all.

What to actually compare

MCP and agent-native access. Intercom Fin and Ada both have an MCP server — Intercom’s repo is public, Ada’s is not listed. Ultimate.ai, Decagon, Forethought, and Sierra don’t currently publish an MCP server.

Agent-readiness. Intercom Fin leads the category at 79, followed by Ada (51), Ultimate.ai (48), Decagon (36), Forethought (33), and Sierra (25) — a wide spread compared to how tightly compliance certifications cluster across the same vendors.

Compliance depth. This category carries some of the heaviest compliance stacks Crail tracks anywhere. Ultimate.ai’s list is the most extensive (SOC 2 Type II, five ISO certifications, PCI DSS, HIPAA with BAA, GDPR with BCR approval, FedRAMP Low Impact SaaS, and Cyber Essentials Plus). Sierra also carries FedRAMP High alongside PCI DSS Level 1 and ISO 42001. Intercom Fin and Ada both list AIUC-1, an AI-specific certification, alongside SOC 2 and HIPAA.

Market consolidation. Two vendors in this category have already been absorbed into larger helpdesk platforms: Ultimate.ai into Zendesk AI Agents (acquired March 2024) and Forethought into Zendesk (acquired March 2026) — worth factoring in if platform continuity matters for a multi-year commitment.

FAQ

Why don't most of these vendors publish pricing?

Four of the six vendors Crail tracks in this category — Ada, Decagon, Forethought, and Sierra — require a sales call with no published starting price, and Intercom Fin and Sierra are both priced on outcomes (resolutions) rather than seats, which makes a fixed sticker price impractical to publish.

Are these the same tools as a traditional helpdesk?

No — this category covers agents that resolve customer conversations autonomously, distinct from ticketing/helpdesk software a human support team uses. Some vendors here have been acquired by or absorbed into helpdesk platforms (Ultimate.ai into Zendesk AI Agents in March 2024; Forethought acquired by Zendesk in March 2026), reflecting how the two categories are converging.
