PlayHT (later rebranded Play/PlayAI) was a San Francisco voice-AI startup founded in 2021 by Hammad Syed and Mahmoud Felfel, a Y Combinator W23 company offering low-latency text-to-speech, voice cloning, and conversational voice-agent APIs with tiered self-serve pricing from Free up through a custom Enterprise plan. Meta acquired the company in a talent acquisition around July 2025; by January 11, 2026 the play.ai homepage displayed a banner reading 'We have shut down the service. Thank you for being part of our journey,' the site returned HTTP 404 by mid-February 2026, and as of this research (July 2026) the play.ai and play.ht domains no longer resolve at all. Its GitHub organization (Python and Node.js SDKs) is now archived/inactive.
